Cole Believes Club Should Consider Eto'o
Roma defender Ashley Cole, who recently completed his high-profile free transfer move from Chelsea, has stated that the club should consider signing Cameroon striker Samuel Eto’o.
Eto’o is available on a free transfer after Chelsea decided not to extend his contract. The 33-year-old striker still is at the top of the game as showed by becoming the club’s leading goalscorer last season. He was also part of Cameroon’s squad at the World Cup 2014. Cole says that Roma should consider signing Eto’o, who he regards to be a top player.
After bringing an end to his eight-year spell at Chelsea, Cole was widely expected to leave European football altogether and play in the MLS or Middle East. However, he has surprised everyone by joining Roma on a two-year contract. The 34-year-old, who recently announced his international retirement, still has the capability to be at the top of the game. A move to Italy is also likely to extend his career by a few more years given that the Italian game is slow in comparison with the Premier league.
Widely considered as one of the best left backs in the world during his prime, Cole has played against and with some of the best strikers in the world including Didier Drogba. It remains to be seen if Roma will offer Samuel Eto’o a contract.
"All I can say is that I know he's a great player and a top goal scorer. If he were to come, I'd be delighted. I think perhaps English players feel in their comfort zone in England. It's a big opportunity for me to try a different language, culture and way of living. I'm happy with my choice. I'm joining an ambitious club that has signed some very experienced players, and I'm ready to fight for my place,” said Cole.
