SERIE A: ROMA INTO TOP THREE
Italian capital club AS Roma have moved into the top three on the Serie A standings for the first time this season following the nervy win over Cagliari in their last league game on Wednesday.
AS Roma came out on the victorious side of a five-goal thriller with Cagliari at home in whatwas a matchday 14 encounter. Roma started matchday 14 in fifth place but they were able to capitalise on the failings of champions Juventus and Napoli to climb into third spot on the table. Napoli could only play a 1-1 draw at home to struggling Torino, while Italian Serie A holders Juventus were beaten 3-0 at home by Fiorentina.
Juventus played the majority of the game with ten men after the sending off of Colombian player Juan Cuadrado on 18 minutes. Cristiano Ronaldo and co. couldn't do much to prevent the Old Lady from suffering their first defeat of the season.
Roma took a first half lead through French midfielder Jordan Veretout. His goal came on eleven minutes and it was what separated the two teams at the half-time break. Brazilian striker Joao Pedro then scored the equaliser for the visitors shortly before the hour mark. That setback was the wakeup call needed by Roma who went on to add two goals to their tally in the space of six second half minutes. Bosnian striker EdinDzeko scored on 71 minutes to record his sixth league goal of the season and also edge Roma ahead for the second time in the game before Italian centre back added a third goal on 77 minutes. Joao Pedro completed his brace in the first minute of added time to setup a nervy finish for Roma but the Europa League campaigners were able to see off Cagliari for the final minutes of the game to secure the win that moved them into the top three.
