ROMA JOINRACE FOR SAINTS DEFENDER
AS Roma have joined the race to sign Southampton defender JannikVestergaardaccording to the publication from Italian news outlet Tuttomercatoweb. It was disclosed that Italian Serie A champions Juventus and North London club Tottenham Hotspur want to sign the Danish international centre back ahead of this summer's transfer window.
Saints defender Vestergaardhas established himself as an integral part of the Premier League outfit since joining from Borussia Moenchengladbachin the summer of 2018.
The 6ft 6in defender played 42 times for the Saints in his first two seasons in the Premier League and has featured 24 times in the same competition this season. He has been in good form for Southampton this season especially in the first half before picking up a knee problem.
Southampton defender Vestergaardhas caught the eyes of both Juventus and Tottenham Hotspur and the latest report from the abovementioned Italian media outlet revealed that Roma have joined the race to sign him.
Roma might need to invest in a new central defender this summer with current options like MarashKumbulla and Roger Ibanez expected to return to their respective parent clubs. Also, the trio of Chris Smalling, Juan Jesus and Federico Fazio will be in their thirties in the summer. Smalling, Fazio and Jesus all have respective permanent deals at the Italian Serie A capital club.
For now, the primary focus of Roma is qualifying for the Champions League next season either through the league or through the Europa League.
In the league, Roma are in seventh place and they are ten points off champions Juventus in fourth place with six matches left to play this season. Only the first four clubs will represent Italy in the Champions League next season. To this effect, the Europa League looks like the best route for Roma to secure Champions League football.
Roma are in the Europa League semi-finals and they will face Manchester United over two legs in the next two weeks. The winner of the semi-final tie will play the winner of the semi-final tie between Arsenal and Villarreal.
